Sustainable Reservoir Management Solutions for Rural Water Supply in India

Most households in rural areas do not receive potable water at their home's. The government of India invests huge resources to design, built & operate water distribution systems, trying to change this situation. BERMAD hydraulic & automation solutions are implemented in more than 2,500 Elevated/Ground Level Storage Reservoirs (ESR/GLSR) supplying water to villages across India: Arsikere, Hanur, Pavgada, Shivamoga, Ranebennur, Adichinchinagiri and Shantigrama.


BERMAD Key Solutions

BERMAD’s approach to water supply projects involves comprehensive solutions that incorporate critical aspects of flow & level control, preventing reservoir overflow and ensuring efficient reservoir filling. A highly accurate flow metering, as well as automated management systems for remote reservoir monitoring and management. This comprehensive solution provides an integrated approach to water conservation and efficient water distribution.

Flow & Level Control Solutions

For both ground & elevated reservoirs BERMAD implemented at each reservoir inlet:

  • Strainer responsible for removing large particles & debris
  • Water meter
  • Flow & level hydraulic control valve

The reservoirs volume in different locations across India ranging from 5,000 Liters and larger volume tanks with up to 200,000 Liters or more.

Flow & level control solutions for high flows include hydraulically operated control valve that controls reservoir filling and reservoir level. During filling, the valve limits the flow to a pre-set maximum, regardless of fluctuating upstream pressure or reservoir level and protects the valve from cavitation damage. For ground reservoirs BERMAD selected Model WW-757-66-U, a hydraulically operated d Level and Flow Control Valve with non-modulating bi-level vertical float that opens at a pre-set reservoir low level and shuts off drip-tight at a pre-set high level. During filling, it limits the flow to preset maximum, regardless of fluctuating upstream pressure or reservoir level.

For elevated storage reservoirs, BERMAD selected Model WW-757-80-U, a hydraulically operated Level & Flow control valve with 3-way altitude pilot. During filling, the valve limits the flow to a pre-set maximum, regardless of fluctuating upstream pressure or reservoir level and protects the valve from cavitation damage. The valve shuts off at a pre-set reservoir high level and fully opens in response to an approximately one meter (3 ft) level drop, as sensed by the altitude pilot mounted on the main valve.

In locations in which the flow & level hydraulic control valve operates under high operating load an addition WW-720-PD proportional pressure reducing valve upstream to the flow and level control valve should be considered in order to minimize the chance for cavitation condition and cavitation damage.

Flow control for low flows was applied by a direct pressure reducing valve, reducing to a constant downstream pressure, with a downstream orifice. In a location characterized with a high operating load, an additional direct pressure reducing valve was installed, actually dividing the hydraulic load on two stages of direct pressure reducing valves.

BERMAD Automation & Remote-Control Management Solutions

Each reservoir is equipped with a BERMAD Omega Controller, which is connected to a solenoid-operated flow and level hydraulic control valve, a water meter, and a level sensor.

The controller enable real-time water distribution based on actual consumption, prevent tank overflow (backed up by the hydraulic level control valve) through intelligent monitoring, and promote efficient water utilization and conservation. The controller transmits data via the BERMAD ESR management software, ensuring seamless integration and centralized control.

In areas prone to power supply issues, BERMAD’s systems are engineered to operate efficiently without power, ensuring that no tank overflows. This becomes especially important in rural areas, where power outages can disrupt the normal functioning of traditional water supply systems. BERMAD’s solutions ensure continuous, uninterrupted water distribution, even in the event of a power failure, thus always guaranteeing water conservation and efficient usage.

Arsikere
The project was completed successfully and has been operational for over five years. The project has now been handed over to the government for Operation & Maintenance (O&M), ensuring that it continues to serve the community effectively.
